Changes Health & Wellbeing is part of the HMPPS and ESF Funded CFO3 Project
which is designed to help offenders move towards social inclusion and mainstream provision.

Originators and innovators of the recovery and wellbeing approach –

Changes has over 25 years experience as a mental health service provider. During this time it has developed an original and innovative service model that has a compelling evidence base regarding its efficacy in promoting recovery, wellbeing and inclusion.

Changes has been involved in all 3 rounds of the CFO contract funded by The European Social Fund leading to successful and valued delivery within HMPs in and around the East Midlands and Staffordshire. Changes has also developed a productive and effective partnership with Probation Services.

Changes is ideally suited to supporting APM and other CFO3 delivery partners, end-to- end and strategic, operating within the East Midlands.  Through the provision of supportive measures, short courses and VETs it provides a service that supports a client’s sequential journey towards more effective management of mental health issues, long term conditions or disabilities.

The Changes service menu is delivered by a team of qualified and experienced Wellbeing Coaches, working from CFO3 partners’ premises across the East Midlands - both HMPs and community venues.

Working closely with The Open College Network West Midlands, Changes offer accredited and established courses that effectively deal with a range of wellbeing and employability issues.

'Positive Changes to Promote Recovery from Mental Distress’
is offered as a level 1 course worth 3 credits.

This course provides ways of promoting recovery from mental distress by developing a more positive
attitude to life in terms of healthier thinking and healthier behaviour leading to healthier feelings.

‘Advancing towards Employment’ is a level 2 course worth 2 credits.
This course helps learners to understand the importance of identifying areas of their life
that they are unhappy with and developing a plan to move forward in these areas. It then
goes on to explore the link between wellbeing, social inclusion and employment and ways of
overcoming barriers to employment.

‘Understanding what Volunteering is about’ is a level 1 course
worth 1 credit.
The course helps learners to identify different types of named voluntary organisations and
the skills that it would be useful to have if volunteering for such organisations. It then goes
on to look at benefits that can be gained from volunteering and rights and responsibilities of
volunteers.

‘Understanding the Effects of Crime’ is a level 1 course worth 1 credit.
This course helps learners to identify different types of crime, the reasons why people
become involved in crime and the effects of crime on different groups in society.

The ‘Positive Changes to Promote Recovery from Mental Distress’ level 2 course expands on
what is provided in the level 1 course in terms of promoting recovery from mental distress
and also looks at ways of limiting unhealthy feelings and the impact of healthier feelings on
life.

‘Volunteering’ is a level 2 course worth 7 credits.
Unit 1 enables learners to identify and apply for different volunteering opportunities that
match their personal skills.

Unit 2 identifies the specific needs of the position that has been
applied for and how these can be met by the volunteer. It then goes on to look at how
volunteering benefits different parties and the rights and responsibilities of volunteers.

Unit 3 involves the learner carrying out their volunteering role effectively and then
evaluating their own performance in this role.

‘Level 2 Peer Mentoring’ is a level 2 course worth 4 credits.
The first unit of this course looks at the purpose of peer mentoring, relevant legislation
affecting the peer mentor and expected codes of conduct. It goes on to look at procedural
matters such as record keeping requirements and how to make referrals as a peer mentor.

The second unit looks at the communication skills that are valuable when establishing a
peer mentoring relationship. It then looks at ways of reviewing progress and how to
successfully bring a peer mentoring relationship to a close.
Finally the learner reflects on their own peer mentoring skills and identifies areas for future
development.

‘Motivation’ is a level 2 course worth 4 credits.
The first unit of this course looks at what motivates is, the impact of a lack of motivation on
ourselves and different influences on motivation.

Unit 2 starts by looking at ways of influencing our own wellbeing by developing healthier
thinking and behaviour to challenge negative feelings.
Finally the course looks at ways of being more assertive, the impact of goal setting on
motivation and how to plan a pathway that will improve personal wellbeing.
