TRUST JOINS FORCES WITH CHANGES YP TO HELP
IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR YOUNG
PEOPLE IN NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE
A new forum giving children and young people a much greater involvement in how mental health services are shaped and delivered in North Staffordshire is being launched.
North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust has provided the funding to local user-led mental health charity Changes YP to set up the Young Persons’ Forum.
The forum forms part of the Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (CYP IAPT) programme, an NHS England-led initiative aimed at improving existing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in the community.
Young people participating in the forum will play a key role in deciding the way CAMHS is designed, delivered and monitored, while full support, guidance and encouragement will be provided to help members have their say in how services can be enhanced for young people.
Its inaugural monthly meeting takes place on Thursday 21 August at The Ashlands Centre in North Street, Newcastle, ST5 1AZ from 6-7.30pm and young people are welcome to attend.
An engagement event held in July proved a real success, with feedback including:
• "This project is a brilliant opportunity. It is very important that we help to improve young people’s access to mental health services for the benefit of other young people.”
• "I'm really excited to be involved in the Young Persons’ Forum. I'm looking forward to meeting new people, exploring different perspectives and making positive changes to the service in the future.”
• "As an ex-service user, the CYP IAPT is a project that I've always hoped to be a part of. I am ready to have my voice heard and give something back to the services that helped me."
Lois Cocker, Changes YP’s Children and Young People’s Participation Lead, said: “I am thrilled with how enthusiastic the young people are about getting involved, and I can't wait to engage more young people and really get the council off the ground.
“So far, we have had young people involved with staff interviews and staff training days, which is really exciting as it is great experience for them and it is great that they can see first hand that what they have to say is making a massive difference.”
Dr Claire Halsey, Clinical Lead for NSCHT’s Children’s and Young People’s division, said she had been bowled over by the energy of those she had spoken to.
“It’s been a real privilege being involved in this,” said Claire. “The enthusiasm and willingness of the young people I’ve met to contribute and get something done has been really inspirational.
“These are young people who have had some difficulty in their lives and who are determined to make a real difference to other young people living in the local community.
“We’re working closely and collaboratively with Changes YP on this project and I’m really looking forward to seeing where the forum will go.”
